![]() They want to find absolute pleasure, absolute pain, and absolute truth. That's pretty much the drive behind every person who has ever touched Lemarchand's box (the puzzle box). He's haunted by the dead and will do anything to find that answer. You have a man obsessed with finding 'truth' about 'the other side' who builds this ship in order to cross over and find.something. Watching it after a long hiatus I realized that this movie really came off as Hellraiser in space, and they made that movie. It's not that the effects were too gory/not gory enough, or that the structure of the story or pacing were poor. I watched this again the other night for the first time in years, and I think I know why it did so poorly. ![]() It manages to be scary as hell despite its many faults, because like it or not, it gets you invested in it very quickly. In that sense, I think this movie is incredibly underrated. I would never, ever, watch that movie in the dark again. I watched it a decade later on DVD and wondered how that amateur hour nonsense could ever have gotten a rise out of me, but of course I was watching it in the middle of a summer afternoon on a laptop in a bright room. It gave me nightmares, and not just a nightmarish date. When it's all put together on an unsuspecting person the gore is incredibly effective, the pacing is effective, and it literally left me cringing and closing my eyes towards the end. The giant screen, the dark room, the blasting audio. It is not a great movie, but if you go into it in a good mood, with a girl you're excited to see naked, and expecting something like Alien or Pitch Black and instead get.whatever this was.it is HORRIFYING. We were both big sci-fi nerds, and the movie, at the time, had been billed as a science-fiction thriller. When I was 16, I took a nerd girl on a date to see this movie. Seriously, did no one question the fact Weir was build the most disturbing space ship in history? If you were going to purposefully build a gate to Hell, it would look exactly like it did. On a final note, rewatching this film I had to laugh thinking about the poor construction workers who had to build this demon ship. His post-Resident Evil work has been so boring in comparison and he's lost all the visual flair he showed in this and Solider. His camera is steady, his tone is consistent and he keeps the action fresh without being boring. He's actually a shockingly good director in terms of understanding space and effectively using a set. This film makes me miss pre-CGI Paul W.S Anderson. Even though the film was drastically cut down, the gore is very effective and the final reveal of the mutilated Weir still haunts my nightmares. It's a cleverly designed set film that basically says "why not have a haunted house movie in space"? Hell the even dock during a lightning storm. Sort of a Lovecraft insanity story mixed with Alien. It's no masterpiece, but it sticks to it's premise and rides it all the way. Not to get all "back in the days" but talking about this film makes me miss that ability. It's one of those cool pre-internet experiences to grow up with this film thinking you were the only one and later discover a huge cult following for it on the internet. This is one of those films I always kept to myself as a kid, this bizarre little space horror film that no one had heard of but I had seen on late night HBO about a dozen times. Oct 9th - Dracula (1931) (Available on Netflix Instant) Oct 8th - Nosferatu (1922) (Available on YouTube the film is in the public domain) Oct 7th - Slither (Available on Netflix Instant) Why do you think the space horror film genre still hasn't produced a film as popular as Event Horizon since it's release?ĭo you takes stock in the idea that this film could be seen as a prequel to Warhammer 40,000? Do you think the small flashes of gore makes the film more effective or do you wish the film was more violent? The film was famously cut down by 30 minutes to reduce the amount of gore. ![]() The ship disappeared mysteriously 7 years before on its maiden voyage and with its return comes even more mystery as the crew of the "Lewis and Clark" discover the real truth behind its disappearance and something even more terrifying. Synopsis: In the year 2047 a group of astronauts are sent to investigate and salvage the long lost starship "Event Horizon".
